A Welsh View: Oymyakon - The Coldest Permanently Inhabited Place On Earth

  • CJ Millisock · 11 months ago
"The lowest recorded temperature here is 71.2 degrees Celsius."

You might want to put a negative sign in front of that.
  • ddd · 11 months ago
as someone who lives in a place where its currently -39c and is only going to get colder, the negative sign isnt really needed or used at that temperature.
  • LA · 11 months ago
    Where do you live?
  • me · 11 months ago
there is a negative sign. can't you read????
  • Melissa · 11 months ago
    there is a negative sign..

the dash is in the line b4.
  • Angela · 11 months ago
They did...Its on the line above it!
  • Bob · 11 months ago
Hmmm. The station at the south pole gets below -100.
They have this thing called the 300 club. You sit in a sauna until it reaches 200 degrees, then run outside naked and experience a 300 degree temperature change. Hence, the 300 club.
  • ZeroOne · 11 months ago
That's in the Fahrenheit scale then. Note that in this article the Celsius scale is used. -100 degrees Fahrenheit equals -73 degrees Celsius and +200 degrees Fahrenheit equals +93 degrees Celsius.
  • laura · 11 months ago
You don't say where the town is--I assume Siberia?
  • Ian314 · 11 months ago
It does say that the town is in Siberia.
  • mathyeti · 11 months ago
I checked out the stats in wikipedia - the killer is that the average HIGH temp for January is 41 degrees below zero fahrenheit!
  • johnny · 11 months ago
yes all very nice but where is it? India, USA , Russia
  • Marc · 11 months ago
Click where it says (map)...it's like the first 3 words of the article. It shows you where it is.
  • entrpy · 11 months ago
It's in Russia. Hope you checked out the wiki page:

Oymyakon (Russian: Оймяко́н, pronounced /ˈɔɪ.mjɑ.kɔn/, Yakut: Өймөкөөн)) is a village (selo) in Oymyakonsky Ulus of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located along the Indigirka River. Population: 800
  • ohcomeon · 11 months ago
Great story. crappy reporting. For Gods sake. you say its the coldest place on earth then don't say what country its in. Sure the geographically smart can guess but his is just another example of the "Generation I'm entitled" (20 -30) who feel it's always someone elses job and screwing up is ok because they were born.
  • Jeff · 11 months ago
Hey idiot, the second sentance of the damn report says that it's located in Siberia. Now if you are too stupid to know that Siberia is part of Russia then why don't YOU go back to school.
  • Sarwar · 11 months ago
But the coldest place in earth is not in russia. Either will be canada of antartica. I was in saskatchewan, northern part the temp goes -60C frequently. So it will not be hard to get a place below than that. As I have experiance of -60 C. I can tell you it not bad except wind chill.
  • Tabitha · 11 months ago
It is the coldest place on earth that is PERMANENTLY INHABITED. There are alot of people on here who obviously cannot read. Almost every question asked can be answered with the article that is right above where you asked the damn question at.
  • Generation I'm entitled · 11 months ago
Hmm bitter and angry much? It tells you in the first word of the article and where it is, with a map. Maybe it's "Generation: Computers, what?" that needs to learn how to use the technology at their finger tips before getting all flustered and complaining when it's right in front of their face.

And screwing up is ok because they were born... I mean really? Maybe you're angry because you're being forced into early retirement by a younger generation that knows how to use a computer.
  • F-dot · 11 months ago
I agree!!! What was with the anger and rage?

For grandpa: It's called a hyperlink, if you click on it, there is more info about that word. It's there to answer the question before you ask it. In the meantime, please remember to take your happy pill before loggin on to the internet.
  • Butterfly Ladybug · 11 months ago
Ha. "Generation I'm entitled". That's funny. But in some ways true. It's more like, "Generation I don't need to, it does it for me, it's all about me, oh well, unless it affects me". Hense the need to put the "MAP" link, rather than doing what you are paid to do, and actually REPORT. But then again that would require effort in giving all of the details, rather than putting some generic link, "that does it for me".

It's not like everyone knows where Oymyakon is? You didn't say New York or something even remotely common. But even then, the geographic details are still noted.

The population is 800. I had more than that in my high school graduating class. I love little towns like that. But I probably won't be spending my Christmas vacation in Oymyakon, unless I set myself on fire to stay at least slightly warm.
  • Generation I'm entitled · 11 months ago
Well, as many other users have pointed out they did in fact report that it's in Oymyakon, Siberia, with in the first two sentences AND they included a map for those who like to complain instead of taking in the contents of the article. "Oymyakon/Ojmjakon/Oimyakon (map) is the coldest permanently inhabited place on earth. Located in Siberia..." I mean what more do you people want?

And it's not "it does it for me" it's called efficiency and time management instead of spelling out needless details for those who are poor readers and need some one to hold their hand.
  • kevin f · 11 months ago
    thank you
  • Perkins · 11 months ago
Can you repeat that for those who decided not to read this too?
  • km · 11 months ago
Will all you bickering idiots take a good, hard look at all the spelling/grammar errors in all of these comments? When considering all the addiction to spell check, which isn't used properly in the first place, where should the finger truly point? Anybody fessing up?
  • ANA · 11 months ago
Who lives here? and Why? I 'm blessed where I live in Califronia, Sunny , Foggy and rain Love it.
  • Dreams · 11 months ago
why would people wana live in such a cold place???????????? Any valid reason
  • DET · 11 months ago
    They're worried about global warming?
  • Slava. · 11 months ago
i'm russian and was born in siberia, -40C was a normal winter day there. schools still open. Why do people live there? Because they have no choice. You are born and raised there then follow in your parents foot steps (in most cases). There are not a lot of opportunities to move. Not enough money.

In general people in russia tend to live in the same city most of their life, often in their parents apartments. Not like in USA where you can get a job in San Diego and move there, then next year get a job in Alaska and move there.
  • Cold here too. · 11 months ago
Because it's "HOME". And their not pussies. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to live in SoCal, with wall to wall people, wild fires and all that crime. But that's just me.
  • Angel · 11 months ago
people need to pay attention. It says where it is in the 2nd sentence. And if you don't know where Siberia is then I guess the school system failed you too!!!!!
  • bobby · 11 months ago
what is the high temp. in the summer?
  • Generation I'm entitled · 11 months ago
    July = 72 high
    42 low, in Farenheit

The user above posted the link to wikipedia which has the temp avg
  • S · 11 months ago
God bless you all brave cold warriors!!!!
  • Xaxatax · 11 months ago
wiki gives the average high temp in July as 72F (22) and the record summer high of 90.7F (33).

That makes for an astonishing difference of 176.4F degrees between record high temp and record low temp.

ok, let me correct 1 thing here, #1 this atricle is about the *COLDEST PERMANENTLY INHABITED* town in the world,,,, yah it may get colder other places, but they are not PERMANENTLY having people live there. and if you would actually SLOW DOWN and read the article, bad reporting of not, it actually does say *WHERE* the town is, siberia is part of russia/eastern europe.

I can't believe the number of people who cannot read!

OK - so Siberia's not a country, but really, are you that uneducated that you don't know where it is. And if you don't, in the time it took to write a response you could have entered it into Google and found the answer.

    Unbelievable.

    Oh... and brrrrrrr!

Did you notice how short the men are? Frigid midgets with rigid digits and when they die they become rigid midgets with frigid digits! LOL! I noticed in the second report that the milk froze almost as fast as it came from the cow! They don't have to manufacture ice cream but then who the heck would eat it! And I thought our winters were cold here in Canada!
  • Djohan · 11 months ago
I am surprised why there are people who want to live in a cold -52C place.
Rusia is a big country, can they just move and find a better place to live somewhere?
I am curious, how do they live there? What do they do for living? What kind of jobs are available there? Is it worth?
Somebody, please help explain it to me.
  • ak · 11 months ago
It was -32F in Chicago yesterday.... and we thought it was COLD :)

note: Russia is actually on two continents Europe and Asia, so everything that is west of the Ural mountains is in Europe the rest is in Asia, thus Siberia is in Asia :) other than that thatnks for sharing this article - i had no problem with it ;)

p.s. to a coment about why people live there? why people live in boonies wisconsin or nebraska or wyoming or any other places? In some countries like china, people don't move around much - they need special permission from the government to do so, so they stay where they are born.

This is the place that Palin can see from her house.

I live in Wyoming - you should hear the whining of the
people here when it gets cold. They should read this
    article!

  • Kenny Boy · 11 months ago
Despite the other posters majoring in minor things, I found this a most enlightening read. I'm from the UK where we moan if the temperature gets to minus 1. This Xmas & New yr has been a wee bit frosty but now I realise I have nothing to complain about. Happy New Year to all.
  • Lay · 10 months ago
WOW! I live in Arizona, US and i can not imagine cold like this--although i HAVE been in cold weather and snow In New York, and Lebanon....its January right now and about 70 F, thats like 21 C, and in the summers it gets 100 F to 120 F at times (thats like 37 C-48C i think) If someone from Siberia and I had to switch i think we would both be in for a BIG shock!
  • Frank · 8 months ago
Yacut is the place where the worlds permafrost mine is, the place where Chrome-Dioptide (Russian Emerald) is mined. Very little english information available on this place where people have lived for a very long time. Very interesting.
  • burry · 5 months ago
Well yes if you read first it definitely says the coldest place INHABITED on earth and it says Siberia. Guess no one reads all the word lol
